See what you should be adding to your shopping list for 2018

Start the New Year off in the right way

With the New Year fast approaching the media will be buzzing with new dietary trends and fads to help you shed those unwanted Christmas calories.

However, it's important to remind yourself that no two individuals are the same and dieting or 'clean eating' can be socially isolating, depressing and downright boring! Listening to your appetite is a great substitute for calorie counting and allows you to eat freely and happily without making sacrifices or feeling guilty.

The key to getting back into shape after the festive feasting is really very simple, should be realistic and tailored to your lifestyle! Increasing your training or incidental activity and focusing on wholesome, nutrient-rich foods with smart portions will be adequate to create an energy deficit.

Wholesome foods to pop on your 2018 Shopping List:

  • Smart Carbs including whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, grainy bread, barley, bulgur, legumes and oats!
  • Colourful vegetables - zucchini, sugar snap peas, spicy leafy greens, radicchio, beetroot, capsicum, radish and heirloom tomatoes!
  • Seasonal fruits such as stone fruit and those rich in anti-oxidants including cherries, dark berries, kiwi fruits and passionfruits.
  • Oily fish, such as salmon and sardines or olive oil based tinned tuna.
  • Palm-sized portions of lean meat.
  • White meats and fish including chicken, turkey, pork and barramundi.
  • Pistachio's, almonds, walnuts, sunflower and pepita seeds.
  • Natural Greek yoghurt, dairy milk or calcium-fortified alternatives.
  • Tahini and nut butter.
  • Edible flowers (if you're into fancy foods)

Wishing everyone a wonderful New Year!
