Spinal Management

Symmetry Physiotherapy is an affiliate of the Spinal Management Clinic of Victoria (SMC).

The SMC is a network of practitioners, primarily physiotherapists, with advanced training in the management of both acute and chronic spinal injuries. SMC practitioners have a reputation as leaders in their field, primarily because of the success they achieve in facilitating recovery of individuals with complex and difficult spinal conditions who have had limited success elsewhere.

Spinal management practitioners go through a thorough examination process with their patients, enabling them to provide an accurate diagnosis, education and treatment program. In most cases, this will involve a specialised rehabilitation program aimed at using exercise to improve strength and maximum support for injured spinal structures as this is now accepted as the most effective treatment of chronic spinal pain. Not only is there a commitment of SMC practitioners to base their practice on the most recent scientific research available, but many of the group are also actively involved in continued studies on the treatment of spinal pain.

Symmetry Physiotherapy is proud to be a research centre, for a current three year trial on the effectiveness of specific treatment for low back pain (STOPS). This La Trobe University study is hoped, when published, to not only improve the quality of back pain treatment in Australia but have a significant impact worldwide.
