Psychology is the study of the human mind including the emotions, mental states and behaviours of individuals.

Psychologists are practitioners who have studied the brain, human development and the processes determining how people think, feel, behave and react. Psychologists use reliable and scientifically supported methods to assist people with everyday problems such as stress and relationship difficulties, and some specialise in treating people with a mental illness.

Psychologists work in a wide variety of areas. These include Clinical Neuropsychology, Clinical psychology, Counselling psychology, Educational and Developmental psychology, Forensic psychology, Sports Psychology, Community psychology and Organisational psychology.

Alan Williams is an expertly trained Counselling Psychologist. This involves the use of a variety of evidence-based therapeutic strategies to meet the specific and varying needs of clients. He focuses on creating collaborative, therapist-client relationships with the aim of building psychological strengths and wellbeing as well as resolution of difficulties and disorders. Clients are assisted to assume control of their lives by developing new perspectives and understanding. As a result they learn to think in new ways, manage difficult emotional experiences more effectively, and practice different ways of behaving.

Alan works with many types of issues but the more common problems include Anxiety, Depression, Panic Attacks, Fears and Phobias, Grief, Loss and Trauma, Stress Management, Low Self Esteem, and Relationship difficulties.

Rebates are available for psychological treatment through Medicare via the Better Access to Mental Health Care. To be eligible for this rebate, an appropriate referral must be provided by your GP. This is an Australian Government program developed to provide considerable assistance to people living with mental health problems, allowing them greater access to psychologists and providing more affordable mental healthcare. There is a gap payment above the Medicare rebate. Private health insurers may also rebate part of the cost of psychological consultations. This depends on your level of cover and needs to be checked with the health fund.
