Wanting to return to exercise but not sure where to start?

Think about getting off the couch and exercising?

Have you spent the winter hibernating at home, staying in front of your warm and cosy fireplace?

If so you are probably feeling lethargic, tired and may be suffering a serious lack of motivation!! Have you been wanting to return to exercising but not too sure where to start?

What do you enjoy?

Is it super important to find an exercise or activity that you enjoy doing, whether that be the gym, indoor or outdoor fitness classes or simply getting out and walking. If it's something you like, you are more likely to persevere and put that little bit of extra effort in. If you don't like outdoor boot camps try something indoors, if you don't like running try a bike! Getting a friend to tag along can be a great idea to help motivate each other and keep you company.

Small steps

Increasing your activity levels doesn't mean you have to go to a gym session at 6 am and then after work! Try to get out and move a little more each day. Whether that's taking the stairs up to the next floor at work or using the steps instead of the escalator when getting off the train. Or even trying to spend less time sitting at your desk, every little bit counts!!

Where are you now?

The first step in increasing your activity is deciphering your starting point. When was the last time you exercised, or are you new to exercise? What have you enjoyed doing in the past? No one's body is made to go from sitting 8 hours a day to jogging 10km every night, there has to be a gradual build-up to help our body acclimatise.

Having a large jump in exercise frequency or intensity can sometimes be more detrimental than beneficial!!

Here at Symmetry Physiotherapy, we are here to help you whether you are getting knee pain after increasing your walking routine or shoulder pain from your latest gym session. Whatever your concern may be Symmetry Physiotherapy can help you!!
