Can taking Vitamin C supplementation help prevent and cure a common cold.

Vitamin C Supplementation for the Common Cold

The common cold is just that - the occurrence of a runny nose, sore throat and blocked sinus. With a chilly winter upon us it is completely natural to want to avoid getting sick - this is where nutrition and diet are important.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is found in fruit and vegetables and is prevalent on supermarket and chemist's shelves in supplement form. Our body uses Vitamin C to fight infection and keep our immune system functioning. So should we supplement to warn off the common cold?

A recent systemic review (the highest level of evidence available) assessed people who used 1-4 g of Vitamin C supplementation at the onset of their symptoms. This higher dose of supplementation reduced the average length of the cold by only half a day!

Overall, the review found the taking of Vitamin C supplementation is not likely to prevent or significantly reduce the duration of a cold. Luckily, we can get enough Vitamin C in our diet by consuming bright coloured foods such as oranges, capsicum, kiwi fruit and leafy greens. The take home message: Save your money on supplements and eat your way to a healthy immune system.
